Brief Bio

Dimitris Condos was born in Tripoli (Peloponnesus) in 1931. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1955 under Yannis Moralis. In 1958, he leaves for Rome where his fellow artists Vlassis Kaniaris, Yiannis Gaitis, Kostas Tsoclis and Nikos Kessanlis were already there. In 1959, the five artists formed the "Gruppo Sigma", an artistic group in line with the latest art movements and presented their ideas in Naples, Bologna and later in Athens. In 1961, Condos moved to Paris where he stayed until 1964. In 1964, he returned to Athens where he was appointed to the permanent teaching staff of drawing at the Faculty of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens. Concurrently with his teaching career, Condos continued painting pictures that explored the variety of themes that interested him; the integration of art into everyday life through the production of original multiples thus making art more accessible to a broader public; the interplay between word and image, prime example of which is the "Roman Pictural", an actual book with art as a content. In 1968 he was appointed supervisor of Free Hand Drawing at the National Technical University of Athens; meanwhile he started his own Studio of Free Hand Drawing and Painting in Athens. In 1984, Condos was appointed professor at the newly founded School of Fine and Applied Arts at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki where he continued his artistic and teaching career. He died at the age of 65 in Thessaloniki in 1996. His paintings are found in several public and private collections.
